Sayonara Summer! After Summer Skin Care

Sayonara Summer! Here comes Fall, followed by Winter! Are you ready for it?

Yea, I’m not sure I am either but I do love the Fall and especially love Winter. 😊

Changing weather signals changes to our skin care routines. You might notice your skin is looking and feeling different too. Summer fun, pool, surf, sand and sun can leave skin in need of a little extra TLC.

Now is the time to make adjustments to your skin care routine and prep your skin for the dry fall weather.

Summer Skin Damage

Let’s first examine skin concerns. Perform a skin assessment on your skin and look for hyperpigmentation, dehydration, dullness, and loss of plumpness. If you see anything that’s very different than previous months, make an appointment with a dermatologist. Everyone should have an annual visit if not to review moles and check for early signs of skin cancers.

The summer months causes the most damage to our skin. In fact, 80 percent of all outward signs of aging on our skin is caused by UV exposure. Dark spots and fine lines and wrinkles are examples.

With the sun, we also expose our skin to salt water, chlorinated pool water, and air conditioning which all contribute to dehydrated skin.

As a result, you can find your skin looking a little duller than usual and that plumpness to disappear.

Pivoting Skincare Routines as Weather Changes

Rejuvenating skincare is all about skin retaining (or regaining) it’s healthy appearance by being well hydrated, plumped, and most important, functioning optimally. The latter applies to restoring the skins natural barrier, so it is working as it should to retain moisture and keep skin hydrated.

It’s really about small tweaks to your skincare regimen and slowly introducing new ingredients.

Detox: Now is the time to do some deep cleaning. This will remove excess oils on the skins surface and inside pores, as well as debris accumulated during summer activities. Clogged pores have the potential to turn into acne flare-ups. And pores they appear larger. Over time, pores lose elasticity and remain stretched out, so clearing quickly is key.

Dry skin doesn’t handle exfoliation as well as plump, hydrated skin. Consider an acidic exfoliation instead of mechanical. In example, products with lactic acid or salicylic acid are gentle acidic exfoliaters. Once skin returns to being hydrated and supple, you can return to your normal exfoliation methods.

Gentle Cleansers: If your skin feels tight after washing, it’s likely the cleanser you are using has disrupted your skin barrier. Opt for cleansers that clean skin without stripping it of moisture. Natural, organic soaps can be the answer as well as oil-based cleansers.

Richer Moisturizers: One of the biggest challenges in autumn is targeting moisture loss. Try adding a slightly richer moisturizer or adding a facial oil into your routine. Thicker moisturizers tend to have higher oil content. Oils can help lock in hydration. They are emollients and keep our skin soft and supple. If you really like your face cream, try adding a facial oil after applying the face cream. Always allow 5-10 minutes between applications for absorption.

SPFs: Exposure to the sun will be less in autumn but that doesn’t mean you should throw your sunscreen in the trash. You still need to protect it from UV rays, even if overcast.

Add Active Ingredients: Fall is a great time to add or increase the use of active ingredients such as retinol, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and beta & alpha hydroxyl acids (BHA/AHA). Introduce these ingredients slowly if you’re new to them to avoid irritation.

In Closing

Skincare needs change with the seasons and what worked for summer, tends not to work as well in the fall. To rejuvenate skin after summer and tackle seasonal moisture loss, opt for gentle cleansers, rich moisturizers, and hydrating ingredients.

Keep filling the world with love, joy, and hope. What you do will impact someone else and you won’t even know till one day, years later, they share how you changed their lives! What a gift!

P.s. I have formulated a wonderful line of skin care face creams, serums, with hyaluronic acid, and a retinol serum. I also formulated an amazing salve that works wonders on dry, cracked skin. Think of all those areas that need extra TLC (heels, cuticles, toes, elbows, knuckles, etc.)

P.s.s. For dry colder months our body butter and lotion stick are great to keep on hand. If you like lotions, the Creamy Skin Treat is a thicker lotion ideal for fall time.

And of course let’s not forget the amazing and incredible line of soaps that won’t strip your skin of oil or leave you feeling itchy or dry. It’s truly amazing what a single bar of good natural, organic soap can do for skin health. It all starts with your cleansing agent.
