Focus on the Feet!

Because our feet are covered with shoes and socks most the day, we tend to forget about them. Until something goes wrong, we realize just how important our feet really are.

Feet are surprisingly complex. Your feet have more than 100 muscles, 26 bones and 33 joints, along with a network of nerves and blood vessels. All these work together to provide stability and balance as you move around your day.

There are skin problems like athletes foot, which is caused by fungus, or warts, caused by a viral infection. Generally these are not serious but should be treated immediately. There are also structural problems like hammertoe and bunions. Both conditions can first be treated by wearing shoes with plenty of toe room. Eventually, surgery may be needed.

Summertime sandals, flip flops, or bare feet can cause skin on toes and heels to crack. If left untreated, they can lead to more serious bacterial infections. Using a salve, Vaseline, or anhydrous (without water) body butter can help. Placing a sock over a salve treated foot while sleeping can really help. Other common foot problems include sport injuries, toenail troubles, and painful joints.

Feet can also provide early clues to problems in other parts of the body. In example, swollen feet could warn of high blood pressure or kidney or heart disease. Tingling, burning, or numbness might signal some type of nerve damage. Nerve damage in the foot is often a warning sign of diabetes.

If the Shoe Fits

No matter your age or health condition, wearing well-fitting, supporting shoes can have a big effect on your health. Since feet tend to widen a bit as we get older (and during pregnancy, it’s a good idea to measure your feet for your next shoe fitting if it hasn’t been done in a decade or so.

Anytime you feel foot pain that lingers, it’s a good idea to see a health care provider. Give your feet the love and attention they deserve!
