Pomegranates – Did you know?

Pomegranates—that delicious red seeded fruit that is in abundance this time of year—really shine in their wealth of powerful plant compounds, some of which have potent medical properties!  Yes!  Good for the inside, good for the outside!

Pomegranates pack two unique substances that are responsible for most of their health benefits.  Punicalagins (found in the juice and peel) and Punicic Acid (found in the seed oil).  Punicalagans have three times more antioxidant activity than red wine or green tea!  Punicic acid—a fatty acid—is a type of conjugated linoleic acid which has both internal and skin benefits!  Oooh, who knew?

May aid with certain diseases

Pomegranates powerful anti-oxidant profile has been shown to reduce inflammation which is one of the leading drivers of many serious diseases, including cancer and diabetes.  Because of this, there’s preliminary evidence that shows it may slow cancer cell reproduction in both prostate and breast types.  Additionally, pomegranates may also help reduce your risk of heart disease (by lowering triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol) and arthritis by blocking enzymes that are known to damage joints (osteoarthritis).  What’s more, they may boost your memory and exercise performance due to the rich content of dietary nitrates.

Hydrate skin and reduce acne flareups

But what about skin?  Dermatologists report that pomegranates can replenish dry, dull skin.  It’s a great source of Vitamin C, when applied topically, can improve skin’s texture and brightness.  Pomegranates high antioxidant profile makes it great for fighting acne by warding off inflammation that can lead to breakouts.  Here’s a little DIY pomegranate scrub to try when your skin needs a little pick-me-up.

3 TBSP pomegranate seeds
1 C Cooked Oatmeal
2 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 TBSP Raw Honey

Combine ingredients into a food processor or blender to blend well.  Apply to your face, allowing it to sit for 10 minutes, rinse with warm water, pat dry.
