I am always reviewing and analyzing manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency, quality control, and efficacy in outcomes. In doing so, I came across this label, Made Better Certified with a green check mark in the middle. Hmmm….interesting. What does this mean? I wonder what receiving this certification entails.
Oh boy, did I ever find out. The company who provides the logo and certification is Makesy, formerly The Wooden Wick Co. They are a huge DIY with candle making kits, soap making kits, perfume making kits, etc. They sell individual ingredients, bottles, jars, & vessels, and packaging for products. They claim to be ecofriendly and sustainable. I could not find essential oils anywhere, only fragrance oils and anything organic or organic certified was nowhere to be seen. Also, the words “responsibly sourced” were absent from any ingredients.
You may have heard of them or even ordered from them. They look to have some fun DIY kits for a girls fun night of crafting, something for the kiddos, or crafts to do as gifts for the holidays.
I inquired about the Made Better logo. On their application form they have great buzz words like eco-friendly, cruelty free, sustainable living, and the like. I submitted an application with business information and the important box listing ingredients used in formulations. This took me an hour to do as I was careful to include everything! After submitting I received an email informing me I’d hear back within two to three days. I was thinking wow, how can they possibly validate all the information I just submitted in two days!
Well, two days later I receive an email asking if I buy any products from them and if I do, I can display the Made Better Certified logo. WHAT???? Oh.Em.Gee!!! What a sham! I couldn’t believe it!
All the Made Better Certified logo means is that the person or small business purchases their products from Makesy. (They have a large selection of ready-made products for labeling and resale) It doesn’t mean anything about manufacturing or ingredient sourcing. Only where supplies are purchased. There’s no ensuring that items are ethically sourced, that ingredients are what they say they are, or processing is indeed made better. It’s just them telling you it is! It’s like getting a Certified Shoppers CostCo badge because you shop at CostCo.
Now you are a better and more informed consumer and know that a Made Better Certified logo means absolutely nothing.
Don’t be fooled by gimmicks. Ask questions. Be informed.
